Preventative Care

Preventive Dental Care is your path to healthy teeth.

Get on top of your dental health problems before they happen with proper preventive dental care.

At Redland Bay Smiles we strongly believe preventive dental care is the cornerstone of a healthy mouth. We encourage patients to come see us at least every 6 months for a comprehensive check-up and, if required, a thorough cleaning, x-rays and fluoride treatment. Check-up appointments are necessary in order to catch problems before they cause much bigger issues which can be potentially painful and debilitating. For example, signs of gum disease, such as bleeding and bad breath, caught and treated early can prevent future pain and loss of teeth. Similarly, cavities caught and treated early can prevent future pain, need of root canal treatment or extractions.

At these check-up appointments our Dentists at Redland Bay Smiles will also demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques and answer any questions you may have regarding your own particular circumstances. After each check-up appointment patients are given, if required, detailed treatment plans outlining any treatment necessary and associated costs. At Redland Bay Smiles we pride ourselves on our professionalism and commitment to fully earning the trust of our patients and as such no treatment will be completed without patients being fully aware of what is being performed and of any costs involved.

Comprehensive Check-Up

A comprehensive check-up every at least every six months is a critical component of good preventative dental care. A regular check-up is usually a relatively simple procedure, and it can allow your dentist to identify new issues or ongoing concerns that require attention. A comprehensive check-up will involve a complete review of all of your teeth and gums. You will undergo a thorough dental inspection with the aim of identifying and dental problems that need to be addressed.

Teeth Cleaning

Teeth cleaning at regular intervals (usually when you come in for a comprehensive checkup) can help avoid the accumulation of plaque and debris in and around your teeth and gums that can cause problems such as bad breath, gingivitis and gum disease. In addition, a good teeth cleaning can make your smile brighter and whiter, which can help encourage you to form habits to keep it looking great.

Fluoride Treatment

As part of a regular preventative health regimen, fluoride treatment is critical in giving your teeth an added boost in their fight against daily damage from multiple sources. When you come in for a checkup we’ll give you a fluoride treatment that will give your teeth a temporary protective coating.

Preventive Dental Care Tips

Want to take proactive steps to keep your teeth and gums in good health? There are some things you can manage on your own, without the assistance of a dentist, to give your teeth a long and happy life.

Brush Your Teeth Correctly and Often

Brush your teeth every single day to help prevent the buildup of plaque and damaging bacteria. Brushing your teeth daily is recommended by the vast majority of dentists as the most important thing you can do to avoid developing future problems with dental health.

Floss Every Day

Flossing cleans the places that your toothbrush doesn’t reach. Most dentists (including us) recommend that you floss daily in addition to brushing your teeth. Flossing correctly will remove food debris from between your teeth and gums. Flossing isn’t as simple as it looks though – many people floss incorrectly. Next time you’re in, ask us to show you how to floss correctly.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Eating a healthy, sensible diet is one of the best preventative dental care steps that you can take. Make sure you’re not eating too much sugar, and if you are, try to brush your teeth shortly afterwards. Drink plenty of water and get a balanced intake of vitamins. Vitamin C especially is good for dental health.

Why is Preventive Dental Care so important?

Without a regular check-up, usually simple problems such as cavities can grow steadily worse over time and become expensive, painful and difficult to treat. Regular check-ups can help your dentist track the health of your teeth and gums over the long term. This makes it easier to observe patterns or rapid changes in the condition of your teeth and gums.

Some dental problems can become very expensive if left untreated. Preventive dental care checkups can help to reduce the long-term expense that is associated with treating complicated dental issues. If you visit your dentist for regular checkups, you may be able to avoid paying large of sums of money to treat difficult issues in the longer term.

If we identify potential issues with your teeth, we’ll conduct x-rays to get a deeper look and make sure there isn’t something else going on that we’re not aware of. X-rays can help head off significant problems down the track and ensure that we’re getting the full picture when it comes to your dental health.
